10 Step Korean Skincare

In recent years, K-Beauty has taken the skincare world by storm. It all began when the skincare/makeup hybrid, BB cream, was brought to the western market. Since then, we’ve begun to embrace the innovative formulas and dedicated skincare regimes of South Korea.

The Korean approach is to put skin first. Taking good care of your skin creates a perfect canvas to work from and will cut down the time and money spent on cosmetics. If your current regime is a quick face wash followed by a lot of concealer to cover imperfections, it’s worth investing in a Korean style regime.

The 10-step Korean skincare routine (that you’ll actually stick to):

Step 1: Makeup removal and first cleanse

As with any evening skincare regime, you’ll need to start with makeup removal. An oil-based cleanser is ideal, as it efficiently breaks down makeup and SPF without leaving the skin feeling dry or tight. Remove with a cloth to leave skin completely product free.

Step 2: Second cleanse

Now we’ve removed all the product from the day, it’s time to cleanse the skin. Opt for a water-based cleanser to remove impurities and any oil residue. Double cleansing ensures you’ve removed all impurities and debris so your following products can easily penetrate and get to work. In your morning regime, this will be your first step.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Reveal brighter, smoother skin by exfoliating 1-2 times a week. Gone are the days of harsh, abrasive scrubs; choose an enzyme exfoliator or acid toner containing either AHAs (such as glycolic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid), depending on your skin type. Keep this step for your evening regime, as exfoliation can cause sun sensitivity.

NeoStrata Refine Oily Skin Solution

Step 4: Toner

If alcohol-laden formulas of the past have put you off toners, think again. Modern toners are far more gentle, hydrating and kind to the skin. Swipe over the face in your morning and evening regime to restore the skin’s pH level and prepare for the actives that are coming up.

Exuviance Moisture Balance Toner

Step 5: Essence

A staple in Korean skin regimes but not as heard of in the UK, an essence is a mix of a toner and a serum. It’s an ultra-lightweight lotion that’s packed with ingredients which lock in hydration and work towards a clearer complexion.

Step 6: Ampoule

Another lesser known skincare product, an ampoule is essentially a super-charged serum. It is packed with active ingredients that act as a booster to deliver powerful results. Choose an ampoule based on your skincare concern, such as pigmentation or ageing.

Step 7: Serum

Your serum is another active ingredient cocktail that works to target your skincare concerns. Here, you’ll find those popular ingredients you often hear about, such as retinol, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid, so take some time to find the right formula for you (or get a little help from our Skinora experts).

Step 8: Sheet mask

A long-term Korean favourite that has rapidly grown in popularity over here, the sheet mask is a cloth soaked in nourishing ingredients to deliver a shot of hydration to the skin. Pamper yourself with a mask 1-2 times a week (bubble bath optional).

Step 9: Eye cream

The skin around the eyes is incredibly delicate, so you need a dedicated eye cream to treat this fragile skin. An eye cream can help to hydrate, brighten and target fine lines and wrinkles.

Medik 8 Eye Lift Peptides

Step 10: Moisturiser/SPF

Finally, lock in all those goodies with a moisturiser and leave skin feeling soft and smooth. In the morning, be sure to follow this with a separate broad-spectrum SPF to protect against those ageing UVA rays.
