Skincare tips for acne-prone skin

Skincare tips for acne-prone skin

While we often think of acne as something that’s only associated with teenagers, in reality, acne is a common skin problem that can affect anyone. And regardless of skin type, acne breakouts can even start in your twenties or thirties.

What actually causes acne to occur?

There’s a common misconception that increased sebum on your skin is the main culprit. However, studies have shown that oily skin is not the actual cause of acne – clogged pores are.

You see, clogged pores provide a favourable environment for acne-causing bacteria to spread, which then triggers a breakout. And while excess oil on your skin is indeed associated with clogged pores, dry skin can just as easily develop acne. This is because dry, flaky dead skin cells can stick together on the skin’s surface.

Clogged pores occur for a huge variety of reasons. For example, certain ingredients in products, such as coconut oil and emollients, can also clog pores if they’re not suitable for your skin type.

There are also a number of other things that can trigger acne production including medication, lifestyle, diet, air pollution, stress and the ingredients present in certain products like makeup or sunscreen. Makeup brushes are actually a common, pore-clogging culprit as well, so make sure you clean them regularly.

Luckily, acne can often be managed through a good skincare routine, and by using products that are less likely to cause flare-ups for you personally. Here are our how-to-manage-and-prevent-acne tips.

Skincare regime to prevent breakouts

Knowing what skin type you have, and which products or acne treatments are right for you, is the first step. We’ve put together a 3-min skin quiz for you to discover good skin tips for acne for your own skin type.

If you already know your skin type and ideal products, we recommend following the below skincare regime to prevent acne.

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing thoroughly on both mornings and evenings is the first step. Make sure you use a face wash that contains active ingredients (such as salicylic acid) that unclog pores. This is particularly important in the evening to clean your skin after a long day.

A proper cleanse doesn’t only reduce the risk of breakouts, it also allows for improved penetration of the other products you use in your skincare regime.

And while keeping your skin clean might seem like a no-brainer, when it comes to acne, it’s essential you keep your pores clear without further irritating the skin, as this could lead to even more outbreaks and redness.

As such, finding a cleanser that both works for your skin type and has acne-fighting properties is essential.

Step 2: Treat breakouts as soon as they appear

As soon as you notice a spot coming on, make sure to add acne treatment to it right away. Treating your spot straight away will help eradicate a blemish much quicker and will minimise the redness that develops in the aftermath.

Step 3: Never forget your sunscreen

While using the right sunscreen is vital for a number of skin-related issues, including to prevent hyperpigmentation and skin cancer, it also plays a role in preventing acne breakouts.

You see, the sun is a major cause of clogged pores, which in turn attracts acne-causing bacteria that can trigger spots.

We recommend choosing a non-comedogenic sunscreen as it will prevent clogged pores while still protecting your skin from the sun’s effects.
