Do you suffer from dark spots or skin pigmentation? Uneven skin tone is a common condition that affects many people of all ages and backgrounds. Pigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin than is needed, leaving behind a patch or mark that is darker than the rest of the complexion. It can occur on the face or anywhere else on the body.
Pigmentation can be present in the form of freckles, sunspots, age spots, dark circles under the eyes, and Melasma – a skin condition triggered by hormonal changes.
If you would like more personalised recommendations to effectively treat your pigmentation, take your Skin Type Quiz. Not only will our knowledgable team of experts…
Not only will our knowledgeable team of experienced doctors be able to advise you on the best plan of action, they’ll even handpick the best products for you.
What causes pigmentation?
Pigmentation can be caused by a number of factors including sun exposure, scarring and even hormones. There are three main causes of pigmentation.
1) Exposure to the sun
Freckles and sun spots, also known as age spots, result from sun exposure. They develop on areas of the body that are often exposed, including the face, décolletage and neck.
2) Hormonal changes
Melasma occurs when larger patches of hyperpigmentation develop predominantly on the face. This condition can affect both men and women but is mostly experienced by women and is thought to be caused by changes in hormone levels. In fact, melasma affects around half of pregnant women in the UK and between 10% and 25% of women prescribed oral contraceptives.
3) Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
This occurs as a result of trauma to the skin or another injury. When the damaged skin heals an area of discolouration is left behind. Some cosmetic procedures, including laser treatment, dermabrasion and chemical peels can act as a trigger.
