Is Tap Water Damaging Your Skin?
For many years, we’ve been told that water is an elixir for the skin, providing the essential hydrations it needs. Face washing is something everyone should be doing as part of their skincare routine, but are we going wrong somewhere in using tap water to do so?
What’s in our tap water?
Our tap water in the U.K is some of the cleanest in the world- we’re extremely fortunate for this reason. This is made possible through the use of chemicals and minerals that are added. Both fluoride and chlorine are used to render tap water safe.
However, when the minerals in tap water interact with surfactants in bar soap, forming a soap scum, this can have repercussions on your skin. This residue can form a film on the skin which can upset the balance of new skin cycles, as old damaged skin cells can’t shed themselves. This makes it harder for new skin cells to turnover, resulting in problems like:
- Disrupted moisture barrier
- Dryness and dehydration
- Irritation and sensitivity
- Rough-feeling skin
- Clogged pores
Are certain skin types more vulnerable to the effects of tap water?
Tolerant and oily skin types are less susceptible to some of the effects tap water can have on the skin. Make sure you have a good skincare routine in place and use an alcohol-free toner or washcloth. Even if you’re fortunate enough to fall into these skin type categories, you should still be routinely removing residue from your skin.
Dry and sensitive skin types should use a gentle facial mist or toner to physically remove residue from the skin, in order to prevent the problems listed earlier in the blog.
How can I minimise the damage tap water might be causing my skin?
So, tap water isn’t the best water, but it is low on the list of irritants to your skin. This said, there are steps you can take to improve the quality of your tap water. Purchasing a water filtration system for your shower can make a huge difference, as the water you use will be free of any chemicals or metals that might be lurking in your tap water.
Using a good cleanser every day will also help to get rid of impurities.
