How to protect skin from cold weather

Woman blowing snow - Skinora

During the cold winter months, many people struggle with dry, irritated skin, which, depending on your skin’s sensitivity, can even cause eczema or psoriasis.

The reason it’s difficult to keep our skin happy in harsh winter conditions is simple – there is less moisture in the air and as a result, our skin is less hydrated.

For these reasons, many people often dread the cold, but there is no need to worry if we take the proper steps to protect our skin. Below are a few of our top tips to keep your skin happy and healthy during winter.

Be mindful of hot showers

The first thing that many of us want to do when the cold sets in is turn up the heat in our homes and have long hot showers. However, the hot water can strip your skin of natural oils, which can make it feel dry and irritate existing skin conditions.

We’re not suggesting to take a cold shower in winter (although it can offer incredible benefits for itchy skin), but to make sure that it’s kept closer to a lukewarm temperature to avoid irritation.

Protecting your skin from the sun’s rays isn’t only important during the summer, it’s something that should be a priority all year round.

In fact, the earth’s ozone layer is thinnest during the winter months, which means you can damage your skin even on a grey and cloudy day.

If you are taking a ski holiday, you will want to be especially careful, as snow can reflect back almost 80% of the UVA rays, which doubles your exposure.

Stay hydrated

With the lack of sun and heat, we naturally don’t feel as thirsty as we do during the summer months, but this doesn’t mean that your body needs less water.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and without water, it won’t function properly. Plus, water often is delivered to other organs in the body before the skin, which means drinking around 8 cups of water a day is essential to make sure our skin gets hydrated. Plus, this will help minimise wrinkles and flush out toxins to give your skin a healthier appearance.

Know your active ingredients

There are active ingredients in your skincare products that offer an incredible amount of benefits depending on your skin type and time of year.

During the winter months, Hyaluronic Acid is one of the best active ingredients you can have in your products, as it binds to water in your skin and helps you to retain moisture. And as we’ve already learned, a lack of moisture is what causes a lot of the issues with our skin in the cold.

Anti Ageing Dark Circles Eye RangeUse quality eye cream

The skin around your eyes is thinner and more fragile, which means they often require more hydration and investing in a good quality eye cream is important in cold weather.

Eye creams tend to be thicker and contain more oils and active ingredients than face creams, which helps hydrate the skin and minimize those pesky fine lines we tend to see around our eyes when it’s cold.

Avoid tanning beds

Understandably, many of us miss the sun during the winter. Especially in the U.K. where the days are short and often grey. However, this shouldn’t be a reason to turn to the tanning beds.

Tanning beds are not a safe alternative to the sun. In fact, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, you have a 75% increased risk of developing life-threatening melanoma from just one indoor tanning session before age 35. Not only that, but it can also cause DNA damage and premature ageing.

By saying no to harsh ultraviolet radiation, your skin will stay healthy, youthful, and radiant.
