When it comes to achieving a gorgeous glowing complexion, the key is smooth skin. Think about how light bounces off a mirror; the smooth surface of the glass ii what allows the light to bounce back and create an illuminating effect. The same thing happens with the skin. When the superficial surface layer of the skin – the stratum corneum – is as smooth as possible, light bounces off the skin to create a healthy glow.

In order for skin to be as smooth as possible, it must be as clear as possible. Dirt, debris, dry patches and clogged pores all lead to dull, flat-looking skin. In order to prevent these problems and achieve beautifully smooth and glowing skin, it is vital to adopt a consistent daily skincare routine which is matched to your skin type. Here are our 5 top tips to help you achieve that healthy glow.

1. Thoroughly cleanse the skin surface

Cleanse your face every day using a high-quality cleanser suited to your skin type. The right cleanser will remove makeup, dirt, debris, and unclog pores at the same time. Clogged pores are a common problem for both oily and dry skin types, and they often lead to pimples, blackheads and bumps on the surface of the skin. Not only will a good quality cleanser work to prevent these issues, but it will also make sure the skin is clear enough to allow products to better penetrate the skin and be more effective.

2. Strengthen the skin barrier

When the skin barrier is strong it efficiently retains water in order to allow enzymes that naturally exfoliate the skin to work as successfully as possible and generate a healthier skin cycle. A strong, healthy skin barrier also prevents irritants and pollutants from entering the skin and causing sensitivity, redness and dullness. People with dry skin should use moisturisers with ceramides to help strengthen the skin barrier. Niacinamide is a great active ingredient for all skin types because it has anti-inflammatory properties in addition to strengthening effects on the skin barrier. Those with redness and flushing should look for products with anti-inflammatory properties such as Niacinamide, Azelaic Acid and Zinc.

3. Treat and prevent pigmentation

Melasma, sun damage, and discolouration from spots and acne all trigger increased melanin production which leads to uneven pigmentation. Ingredients that treat pigmentation work by blocking an enzyme called tyrosinase which is heavily involved in melanin production. Hydroquinone is one of the most effective ingredients for this but it is only available on prescription. Alternative ingredients which can offer great results for treating and preventing pigmentation include Arbutin, Vitamin C, Liquorice Extract and Niacinamide.

4. Protect skin from free radicals with antioxidants

Free radicals are molecules which are missing elements from their shell and which damage our skin cells by going in search of the elements they are missing. This damages the skin cells and results in problems like pigmentation, dullness and skin laxity. Antioxidants act as protective shields for skin cells to deflect free radicals and maintain skin health. Antioxidant ingredients like Vitamin C work to both protect the skin from free radicals and boost collagen which also helps to promote a smoother, firmer skin surface.

5. Prevent ageing and acne with vitamin A

Retinol is the most well-known derivative of Vitamin A. It helps to improve skin cell function in a variety of ways, including the prevention of ageing and acne. It also stimulates epidermal renewal, collagen production, and sloughs away dead skin cells from the skin’s superficial layers to exfoliate and smooth the skin’s surface. Retinols are therefore an important step in achieving a soft, smooth and glowing complexion.

Bonus tip: Always wear sunscreen!

UV rays damage collagen and skin elasticity, and subsequently reduce the smoothness of the skin. It’s vital to protect the skin from the sun’s UV rays by wearing sunscreen every day, no matter whether you’ll be spending lots of time in the sun or not.
