The best sunscreens for your face for everyday use
It’s summer, the sun is shining and you want nothing more than a sun-kissed glow on your skin. But did you know that the sun is both the most significant source of UV radiation and the main cause of premature ageing?
Believe it or not, 90% of skin ageing is caused by the sun. The UV (ultraviolet) light found in sunlight breaks down the connective tissues in your skin, causing it to lose elasticity and thus sag and wrinkle. What’s more, too much exposure to the sun can also result in pigmentation changes (including brown spots), skin lesions and even skin cancer.
The main way to protect yourself from sun damage is by using the right sunscreen for your skin type. We’ve gone ahead and listed everything you need to know before choosing the best SPF for your skin, as well as our all-time favourite sunscreens.
The difference between UVA and UVB rays
Sunscreen protects the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which are made up of UVA and UVB rays.
UVB rays penetrate the outer layers of the skin, causing you to either tan or burn. They are the rays most associated with skin cancer, and get reflected from sand, water and snow.
UVA rays are more penetrating than UVB rays as they reach deeper layers of the skin, breaking down collagen and causing premature skin ageing, wrinkles and dull, pigmented skin. While you physically don’t feel the effects of UVA rays, they are very damaging to your skin and can even penetrate windows and clouds.
As such, it’s really important to apply sunscreen every day, even if the weather is cloudy or you spend most of the day indoors.
What Sun Protection Factor (SPF) should you use?
So what should you look for when deciding which sunscreen to use? In short, the higher the SPF rating, the more your skin will be protected from the sun’s rays.
Always opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 50 as it protects your skin from 50% more UV rays than SPF 30. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen (meaning it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays) that is water-resistant.
It’s also good to know that there are different types of sunscreens, including physical and chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens act as a shield by reflecting UV rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb and convert UV light into heat energy. As they contain different ingredients, which type is best for you greatly depends on your skin type (more on that later).
How much sunscreen to apply
When it comes to applying sunscreen, there is no official recommended amount. But as skincare doctors, we recommend applying the equivalent of half a teaspoon to your face and neck. Start with your face, gently massage it in and then wait a few minutes before applying the rest so it has time to skin in.
