What is the best age to use anti-wrinkle cream?

Should you start using anti-ageing products in your 20's?

From maintaining a healthy diet to getting enough exercise, the decisions you make in your 20’s and 30’s will affect you later on in life. Of course, it is no different when it comes to your skin.

Your skin’s natural ageing process starts in your 20’s as collagen, a key structural support component in your skin, begins decreasing by about 1% every year. At the same time, your skin’s elasticity naturally starts to decline, as does the production of hyaluronic acid (an important water binder that retains moisture in your skin.) The result? Those fine lines and wrinkles most people don’t like.

As skincare doctors, we have the pleasure of assisting clients of all ages, and with all sorts of skin concerns. But one question we get asked again and again is whether there is a perfect age to start using anti-ageing products.

And while the answer varies from person to person (more on that later), it’s important to understand that there are a number of (preventable) factors that speed up the natural ageing process.

So we decided it was time we wrote a blog article on how adopting a holistic approach to skincare can help reduce the signs of ageing.

We hope you find it useful – and if any further questions come up, don’t hesitate to reach out to us

How do we get fine lines and wrinkles?

Firstly, let’s have a look at some of the most common reasons behind why we start seeing those little wrinkles on our face.

(1) Exposure to sunlight

Too much UV radiation will cause fine lines and wrinkles

While many people love a sun-kissed glow on their skin, excessive exposure to sunlight is the main cause of early wrinkling. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of skin ageing is caused by the sun.

This is because the UV (ultraviolet) light present in sunlight speeds up the natural ageing process by breaking down the connective tissue that keeps your skin strong and flexible.

And as your skin starts to lose elasticity, it will naturally sag and wrinkle. So if there is one thing you’ll thank yourself for later in life, then it’s that you always used sun protection (we recommend 50 SPF) while outside. Childhood sun exposure particularly impacts the ageing process of your skin, so it’s never too early to start using SPF.

It’s important to note that UV radiation will also occur when using tanning beds, which we strongly advise against due to the high risk of developing skin cancer.

(2) Smoking

One (of the many) arguments against smoking is that it causes premature signs of ageing. As with sunlight, smoking speeds up the ageing process, in this case by impairing the blood flow to your skin. And with less blood flow, your skin will automatically receive less oxygen and fewer nutrients.

Furthermore, many chemicals present in tobacco smoke damage the collagen and elastin in your skin, meaning that it results in a loss of elasticity and strength as well.

So if you want to keep your skin as wrinkle-free as possible, pass on those cigarettes (its never too late to stop – your skin will still benefit regardless of age.)

(3) Diet

Did you know that the saying ‘you are what you eat’ applies to your skin as well? After all, beauty comes from the inside, and your diet has a big role to play in skin health.

The environment we live in is full of free radicals such as dust, pollution and passive smoke. Our skin is the primary barrier that protects the body from these external aggressors, but unfortunately not without consequences. Frequent exposure to such radicals damages the skin and speeds up the natural ageing process.

Luckily, there are molecules called antioxidants that neutralise these free radicals. And by eating antioxidant-rich foods, you are naturally giving your skin the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. An anti-oxidative rich diet includes foods like strawberries, spinach, kale, blueberries, artichokes and dark chocolate, to name a few.

When to apply anti-ageing creams

As we hinted at earlier, the actions you take in your 20’s and 30’s can impact your skin later on in life. If you follow the advice we covered above from a young age, your skin will naturally have fewer fine lines and wrinkles down the line.

But what about using anti-ageing creams and products? What age is best to start?

It really varies from person to person, and there is no generic, perfect age that fits everybody. But because there are a variety of factors that can contribute to skin ageing, it is never too early to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Your skin type plays a big role here as well. From shea butter to vitamin b3 and copper peptide, anti-wrinkle products are made up of all sorts of ingredients. It is absolutely key that you find the right products, and the right skincare regime, for your own skin type.

Skin that is poorly cared for, or is treated with the wrong products, will age more quickly. That’s why finding the best anti-ageing cream that is appropriate for your personal skin type is so very important.

The bottom line
